As part of the ongoing efforts to ensure road safety and improve drivers’ wellness, the Road Safety Directorate has partnered with the Road Accident Fund (RAF) on a wellness campaign using the RAFs state-of-the-art mobile clinic bus.
Through this bus, the RAF seeks to encourage drivers to conduct regular tests and adhere to treatment routines as prescribed to them by their clinics. The mobile clinic bus also has a dispensing optometrist to prescribe driving glasses on the spot. It also has a mobile clinic, which has a nurse to conduct health checks such as eyes, iron levels, diabetes, and hypertension.
Road Safety Durban Region together with RAF, Ethekwini Transport Authority, Metro Police, SANTACO (Hlokomela), and RTI Umdloti held massive operations around Durban where these wellness services and safe driving were promoted. The first operation was held on the 30th of January and again at Isipingo ranks on the 31st of January.
The focus was on the bus and heavy vehicle drivers and the operation was held at Transnet and Umdloti RTI.
Road Safety Officer from Durban Region, Ann Bonhomme commented on the success of the campaign and said: “We are so proud of the Driver's wellness program using the RAF vehicle. It was proven a great success and it yielded great results. Targeted drivers were extremely grateful for the one-stop-shop service, which targets mainly their wellness and we're confident that such efforts will assist in curbing future road carnages.”
